The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Zambia

Empowering Young People Through Sport and Education

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Zambia (DofE Zambia) and Sport in Action have formed a powerful partnership rooted in shared values: a belief in the transformative power of education beyond the classroom and the vital role of physical activity in youth development.

Together, they are creating opportunities for young people across Zambia to grow through self-directed learning, sports, and community service. Sport in Action’s mission to mobilize youth into education aligns seamlessly with DofE Zambia’s goal of encouraging active lifestyles, sporting engagement, and volunteerism.

A Milestone Pilot Project

In 2023, the two organizations launched a pilot project that introduced 45 young participants to the DofE Bronze Award. This initiative was spearheaded by DofE Zambia National Director Twaambo Chikoye and Wallace Group’s International Sport Development Manager Jack Preston. It was generously funded by Sport in Action Ambassador and British Swimming Centre National Lead Coach, Mel Marshall MBE, with matched support from DofE Zambia.

The results were outstanding:

  • Over 90% completion rate, far exceeding global averages
  • Strong community involvement, with parents, guardians, and older siblings playing a key role
  • Enhanced programme delivery, thanks to Sport in Action’s experienced award leaders and use of Community Hub-Sites

This success marked a significant milestone—Sport in Action was able to offer an internationally recognized education award for the first time, while DofE Zambia expanded its reach with a more sustainable sports component.

Growing Impact Across Zambia

The momentum continues. Now in its second year, the programme has grown to include over 130 young participants across three provinces and seven Community Hub-Sites. Looking ahead to 2025, the partnership aims to expand into a fourth province and launch two new sites in Ndola, Copperbelt.

British High Commissioner Nicholas Woolley, who presented the Bronze Awards at the Annual Highland Games, praised the collaboration and its impact on Zambian youth.

Looking Ahead

The DofE Award is making a lasting difference in Zambia. With continued collaboration, community support, and a shared vision, DofE Zambia and Sport in Action are committed to expanding opportunities and empowering even more young people across the country.
